In a letter to the Journal of the American Medical Association, a team of medical researchers outlined how an emaille telling you that you are not a top performer could be the most effective message to change your behavior.Survey peer shaming email was greatest motivator for behavior changeResearchers were trying to find effective ways to try and stop physicians from overprescribing antibiotics for diagnoses that did not need them - such as most acute respiratory illnesses - using nudges, or modest changes that would not affect physicians financial incentives or stop them from making a choice on their own.They tested their intervention strategies on 248 doctors and nurse practitioners at 47 facilities in Los Angeles and Boston.In one in tervention group, a pop-up screen on an electronic record told the clinician that antibiotics are not generally indicated for this diagnosis. In another intervention, doctors were required to write an antibiotic justification note. In the third intervention, the researchers used electronic health records data to rank the clinicians by their antibiotics overuse. The clinicians received a monthly email informing them that they were either a top performer or not a top performer. In their shaming email, the low performers were shown how many prescriptions their top-performing peers handed out and were given a link of prescribing guidelines to review.Although the feedback and audit interventions caused an initial change in behavior, the peer shaming email had the longest and most lasting effect on clinicians behavior, suggesting that the need for approval from ones peers can be a more powerful incentive than other forms of feedback.No one wants to feel like youre being left behind by you r colleagues, especially when youre a health care professional in a competitive field.A year after the initial intervention, the peer comparison group remained the only group who still had a statistically significant lowered rate of inappropriate prescriptions being made. The researchers speculated that a social shaming intervention could go where medical feedback interventions could not. Peer comparison might also have led clinicians to make judicious prescribing part of their professional self-image, the authors wrote in JAMA. JetBlue reported a three percent increase in retention and a two percent increase in employee engagement after starting a peer-to-peer recognition program where coworkers could nominate a person for their everyday contributions to the company. The nominated persons success story would be shared on an internal newsfeed for all employees to landsee.By sharing the employees success publicly, the system created a positive feedback loop not only does the recipient receive extra congratulations from others who see the post, but other employees in the company also hear stories of positive behavior that can serve as a model,Harvard Business Review explained.The human impulse to measure our progress against our peers can be both a force for good and a deterrent against bad behavior. To change an employees behavior, you do not necessarily need to dangle the carrot of salary raises or the stick of probationary periods. If you dont have a good relationship with your manager or employer, you may be tempted to skip the two weeks notice and quit on the spot. 5 Life Lessons Only an Idiot Needs a Month Off to Learn Gentle Reader, You may have heard that I recently took a month off. While you didnt see a drop in my articles here on Recruiter.com (because of a stockpile of drafts and the hard-working Red Branch Media team), my sabbatical was chronicled in Forbes (ahem) and I wrote a bit about it on Marenated, my home on the Interwebz.I got a lot of questions about my time off from colleagues, family and even people I met on vacation. While I learned a ton from my vacation and subsequent dive back into running my digital agency, I sorta think most people dont need that much time to realize the things that are now painfully obvious to me.1) Keep your friends close and forget about your enemies. Being busy made me inflate the latter with importance and forget about the former. Talk about screwy priorities Work and business are important but not as important as people who care about you. It can be easy to forget this in a highly competitive industry. Dont.So, I decided to platzset aside Fridays for phone calls and emails and cards to friends and colleagues. Of course, I cant spend the whole doing that, but if I bust my hump the rest of the week to ensure that my Fridays are free for connecting, innovating and brainstorming with awesome people then I know my company (and my life, duh) will benefit.2) Inspiration is finite. Coming up with creative designs, campaigns, copy and content for every new client that walks through RBMs virtual doors aint easy people Because inspiration is finite, you need to pounce on it when it shows up and fight hard for ideas you believe in. Lots of people in business want to play it safe, but if you care about the work youre doing, youll push them just a little harder.So, Iam taking morning time to walk and blog. There is only so much time before the crew gets here to work, so if I make myself run for 30 minu tes and write for 30 minutes, the inspiration just might abflug showing up around then. I am pushing calls with clients to the afternoon to attack issues when Im freshestthe A.M.3) Hard work isnt finite. When you find that your muse has deserted you (see 2), know that hard work never will. When youre not inspired, pay the bills or answer emails clean up databases or whatever other mindless trick you need to complete, because despite being boring, that stuff needs to get done. And no one ever got anywhere by avoiding the crummy stuff. Except Tim Ferris, that guys amazing.So, Iam answering emails in batches, writing at a specified time and building admin time into my day. Hard work (whether doing the laundry or your taxes) seems to beam all kinds of creative ideas into my head.4) You are not the center of the universe. Crazy right? I learned this, not at my mothers knee like a normal person, but when I left my business in the hands of my VERY capable team and decided to unplug. Now, I was still posting on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, but I wasnt really reading emails or checking on invoices. In fact, when team members emailed me about very real issues and I just.didnt care. They figured it out. I might have worked myself out of a job.So, Iam taking it easy. I used to promise clients the quickest turnaround I could muster, only to have them say take your time Now I am giving myself less stress and more fun by revising deadlines, pricing structure and that sweet panacea of the overworked entrepreneurdelegation.5) Families change. Whether that means you break up with a spouse, watch your sister move away, lose a beloved cat or simply see the kids entering high school, there is a reason to leave work at work and enjoy all the other things around you. Most people dont need a month off to realize this most basic of truths, but I did. (See also, the song Cats in the Cradle)So, Iam quitting work at 4pm every day. In extreme cases, I may work longer. But I start ear ly, I always work through lunch and so does the team. Theres no reason we shouldnt knock off a little earlier and enjoy our families. In particular, the terms sex discrimination and gender discrimination mean the same when youre speaking in terms of federal civil rights law and anti-discrimination law. So, should you refer to discrimination against women as sex discrimination or gender discrimination? Either works. And is there such a thing as sexual discrimination? T he word sexualis used, however, when youre referring to sexual harassment because sexual discriminationdescribes a type of offense that is sexual in nature. Think of sex as implying gender and sexual as relating to a sexually-oriented activity. Sexual harassment does not solely involve unequal pay, working conditions, or advancement opportunities based on a persons sex or gender, although these can come into play, too. Rather, harassment involves teasing, sexual advances, and unwelcome touching. It mightinvolve jokes or taunting directed at an individual because of her gender. It can include promises of promotion or pay raises in exchange for sexual favors, although sexual harassment is not limited to interactions with the victims employer or supervisor. Co-workers or even a companys clients or customers can be guilty of sexual harassment, and the employers duty is to step in and stop the behavior. The victim and harasser do not have to be of the opposite sex. Sexual Orientation Discrimination The term sexual is also used when referring to discrimination against someone for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer (LGBTQ). In this case, the term sexual orientation discrimination would technically be correct. The victim does not necessarily have to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered. The situation rises to the level of discrimination if the perpetrator acts based on such a belief. No federal laws protect people in general from this type of discrimination,although those who actually work for the federal government are afforded protections. Approximately 20 states have adopted protective laws for gay and lesbian people, and some judges have ruled that behavior aimed at LGBTQ individuals is indeed sex discrimination because the victims were acted against due to the fact that they did not or could not conform to typical gender stereotypes. Gender Discrimination Is Against the Law It is a violation of federal civil rights to deny someone a job, promotion, equal pay, or opportunity based on their gender. It does not matter if the individual is male or female. Sex discrimination is against the law, as are sexual orientation discrimination and sexual harassment.

8 Misconceptions About Women and Sexism in Aviation8 Misconceptions About Women and Sexism in AviationThere are a lot of misconceptions about women in aviation floating around out there, and while the sexism topic gets old for some of you, it remains a conversation that we need to have. As much as wed all like to believe that were just beating a dead horse with feminist debates about women in aviation, some of us believe that its an issue thats worthy of attention. Although it can be subtle, sexism in aviation can also be blatant. An online search for statistics and opinions about women in aviation and all of the accompanying issues left us a bit surprised. Women Just Dont Like Airplanes as Much as Men Its clear that men and women are wired differently. We know from research that boys prefer cars and girls prefer dolls. What we still dont know is how much of the gender qualities we develop early in life are a result of our environment versus biology and genetics. When it comes to aviation, though, the supposition that women just dont like airplanes or are simply uninterested in aviation might be inaccurate. How much of a girls like or dislike of aviation stems from exposure or non-exposure? Whos to say there arent mora girls and women out there who just havent discovered aviation yet? Aviation Is Completely Open to Women Theres No harte nuss Yes, you could argue that aviation is open to women. But is it really? What does that mean? Of course, a woman can learn to fly if she wants to. Imagine with me for a moment, though, that youre a 16-year old female who wants to learn to fly. You muster enough courage to go down to the local flight school or FBO, where you walk in and nobody is at the front desk. You wait, and a male mechanic eventually walks in and walks right by you without saying a hundertprozentig to you. Then, when another employee finally notices you, he or she will assume you are the wife of a pilot, or that youre there to collect the caterin g, or to arrange for a courtesy car for your client, or a variety of other non-pilot tasks. Since you dont fit the profile, its assumed that youre not a pilot or dont intend to become one. Not the most welcoming environment for a woman. Aviation might be available to women, but it isnt the most female-friendly environment. Women Shouldnt Complain. They Already Get Special Treatment Like Scholarships and Hiring Preferences. If Equality Is the Goal, Why Should These Benefits Be Available Just for Women? In general, women in aviation dont want to be treated differently than men theyre not looking for handouts or even scholarship money, but theres a reason for this sort of special treatment and it has to do with a long history of civil rights, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which would prevent people from refusing to hire based on age, sex, religion, or color. Women get hiring preference at an airline in some cases because its societys attempt at redressing past discrimina tion, and rightly so. Its the best we can do. But thats not the end of the story. Lets not forget that a female pilot must be qualified for the job, just like any other pilot, and following that, they still must prove themselves among a group of skeptical male copilots, managers, and even passengers. This is perhaps a perceived notion on behalf of women, but in most cases, a failure on any level for a female in a male-dominated world is unforgivingand fuels the preconceived stereotype that women are somehow not as good as men. While women might get special treatment in some cases, they often still feel the need to work just as hard, if not harder, than the man sitting next to them, in bestellung to earn the respect of their peers and forestall unwarranted criticism in the event of a weak moment. Women Arent Mechanically-Inclined and Have Trouble Learning to Fly There is contradictory research on the topic of a male pilots abilities and personality traits versus a female pilots a bilities and personality traits. Some research suggests that women are less mechanically inclined than men, but whether this is a result of nature or nurture - there is evidence of both -is still a question that nobody seems to be able to answer definitively. While men have generally been said to be better at math and spatial abilities, women who are exposed to math and spatial problems have been known to compete on a level equal to their male peers. Another thing to keep in mind is that subjects at which men are thought to excel - math, systems, and spatial ability - encompass just a small portion of the skills needed for flying an airplane theres also decision making, judgment, teamwork, navigating,problem-solvingand communicating. If its true that women are better at listening, less likely to act impulsively or carelessly, and are better at multi-tasking, then that makes the idea that learning to fly is more difficult for women a pretty outdated one. Sexism Wouldnt Exist in Av iation If We Didnt Keep Bringing the Topic up for Discussion Sexism, like crime, poverty, ignorance, and prejudice of every stripe,doesnt disappear just because we decide to ignore it.Ignorance is only bliss for the privileged, in this case. There Is No Evidence of Sexism at All. If Women Dont Feel Welcome in Aviation, Thats Their Problem There are many examples of sexism in todays aviation environment - some very recent - like Air Canadas problem withnude photos of women being leftinthe flight deck. Even today, there aremembers of the general public who are still uncomfortable with the role of a female pilotin the flight deck. Sexism exists. Its a problem. Theres a reason the conversation keeps coming up. If a Woman Is Offended by a Nude Photo of Another Woman or a Dirty Joke, Then Shes Emotionally Unstable and Shouldnt Be a Pilot Its often said that some girls just cant take a joke. A womans reaction to a comment or joke by apeermay come across as defensive or even overre active in some cases, but we should all be offended by rude behavior, bullying, intimidation, or simply bad taste. Theres really just no place for negative or offensive behavior in a professional environment, and the response to this behavior isnt the problem the problem is the behavior itself. It should be noted that being offended by bad behavior in no way detracts from a persons skill as a pilot. Being offended doesnt mean that a person is unstable or incompetent. In a professional environment like the flight deck, decency should be expected, not checked at the gate. We Need More Women in Aviation Theres a big push to encourage more women in aviation, along with STEM programs in general. There are a lot of people that believe that the industry needs more women. Why? What benefit do women bring to the aviation environment that men dont or cant bring? If women and men are going to be on an even playing field, then why exactly should we be catering to women? It might be truer to say that we need morepeoplein aviation. With a looming pilot shortage and a struggling general aviation industry, we could use more qualified pilots in general. If theres an untapped market of females out there that can and want to ameliorate that pilot shortage and even the playing field at the same time, then why not? But we probably dont need more women in aviation just for the sake of needing more women.
